What to check between local WordPress and the live host

Identify the environment differences that affect a release, use safe local substitutes and verify the remaining assumptions in staging.

A WordPress change that works locally has passed one useful check. It has not yet shown that it will behave the same way on the destination host. Differences in runtime versions, storage, scheduled jobs and external services can turn a small release into a long investigation.

Environment parity does not mean copying every production detail to a laptop. It means knowing which differences could affect the work and checking them before release.

Record the differences that matter

Start with the runtime and application: PHP version, database engine, WordPress version, active plugins, theme code and relevant extensions. Then consider infrastructure behaviour such as object caching, filesystem permissions, HTTPS and background execution.

For each difference, ask whether the feature being changed depends on it. A typography adjustment may not need a queue worker. An integration that refreshes catalogue data almost certainly needs its background path exercised somewhere representative.

For a hypothetical agency build, local uploads might write successfully because the developer owns the project directory. The destination host may have a different writable path or permission model. Testing media handling in staging reveals that difference before an editor finds it.

Use safe substitutes deliberately

A local environment should not send real customer messages or update live third-party records simply because it contains a copy of the database. Use test credentials, intercepted email and suitable sample data where appropriate.

Document the substitute and its limitations. An email preview can prove rendering, but it does not prove delivery through the production provider. A mocked API can prove error handling, but it does not establish that an account has access to the expected endpoint.

This is why staging remains useful. It can test the integration and deployment assumptions that local development intentionally avoids, with controlled access and a clear separation from production activity.

Make setup repeatable

Write the shortest setup guide that lets another developer reach the same useful state. Include prerequisites, dependency installation, configuration sources and how to obtain an appropriate dataset. Keep credentials outside the repository.

Run the guide from a clean checkout periodically, especially after changing a runtime or introducing a new service. A setup that only works because of an old global package is not repeatable even if the original developer uses it successfully every day.

Include a way to recognise that the environment is ready. A health check, representative page and safe integration test are more useful than ending the guide with “start the server”.

Check the release where it will run

Build the release using the intended process and test it in a representative environment. Confirm that assets resolve, required configuration exists and background work has an execution path.

Keep a record of the differences that remain. Some are acceptable and deliberate; others are reasons to delay a particular change. The decision should be specific enough that the next developer does not repeat the investigation.
